Kasra Dash: For York based businesses, speaking from experience with the ones that have contacted us over the past couple of years, the biggest issue is that they do not have a predictable system in place. Many businesses are spending four, five or even £10,000 on different marketing channels and they do not know what they are getting back for that spend. The first thing I would recommend is setting up KPIs. You should know how much money you are spending on each marketing channel, how many leads are generated from each channel, how many of those leads are contactable and how many actually turn into paying customers. The main reason businesses invest in marketing is to get more customers. Once you have that predictable system in place, digital marketing becomes easier because you can switch off the channels that do not perform. For example, you might be spending £6,000 a month on Facebook ads that are not generating enquiries, or the leads may be low quality. Meanwhile SEO or a lead generation company might be delivering strong results. In that case you can double down on the channels that work. That is why KPIs are so important before spending money on digital marketing. James, for a York based business, what would you recommend as marketing strategy number one?
James Dooley: Step number one for me is branding or brand SEO and making sure you look good online with a strong reputation. Everything should start with a positive brand SERP that clearly shows who you are and what you do. SERP stands for search engine results page. When your branding is strong across search results it supports other marketing channels. It improves conversion rates on paid ads and social media campaigns because people researching your business see a trustworthy brand. When potential customers are making a final decision, strong branding becomes very important. That is the foundation for any digital marketing strategy. The next strategy is AI visibility. More companies are beginning to look at this area. What do ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity say about your brand or business? Is the information positive or negative? Businesses should also analyse what these platforms say about their competitors and look for opportunities to improve. Some people call this AI SEO, others call it GEO or LLM optimisation. Whatever the name, it will play a major role in digital marketing throughout 2026 and beyond.
Kasra Dash: That is a huge strategy that businesses need to pay attention to because more people are using AI tools. For example, a plumber could create a page for plumbing services in a particular city and link it with their Google Business Profile. Businesses should focus on producing high quality content, building topical authority and gaining third party backlinks that help strengthen search rankings.
Kasra Dash: Another strategy that links with that is organic social media. Organic social media is largely a numbers game. Businesses need to create content that their audience actually wants to watch or read. I often see brands with only a few posts on Instagram that have not been active for years. That will not generate sales. Instead businesses should publish guides, how to content or before and after examples of their work. This kind of content encourages people to learn more about the brand and visit the website. Posting consistently, even just three or four times a week, can increase visibility.
James Dooley: On the subject of social media, paid social advertising is another major opportunity. If you are already posting regularly, you can boost those posts with a small daily budget. Case studies, awards and reputation based content often perform well when promoted. Businesses can also run retargeting ads to reach people who have previously visited their website. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and Reddit all offer advertising opportunities. Paid social media remains an underused digital marketing strategy for many companies.
Kasra Dash: Another marketing channel is PPC advertising. This includes Google Ads or Bing Ads, which appear at the top of search results. Some business owners spend large budgets and get little return, while others achieve excellent results. The difference often comes down to how well the campaigns are set up. Effective PPC requires a strong negative keyword list, protection against click fraud, high converting landing pages and a sales team that quickly follows up leads. Without these elements, PPC campaigns may waste a lot of budget.
James Dooley: While discussing paid channels, another area to watch is advertising on AI platforms. It has not fully launched yet, but ChatGPT is exploring advertising options and other AI platforms such as Claude and Perplexity may introduce ads in the future. Businesses that adopt these early could potentially generate leads at a lower cost while competition remains limited.
Kasra Dash: Another source of visibility is online forums such as Reddit and Quora. Businesses cannot fully control discussions on these platforms, but positive recommendations from customers can generate enquiries. Encouraging satisfied customers to share reviews or recommend your services can help drive new leads.
James Dooley: Forums like Reddit are also being cited more frequently in AI generated search results. When people discuss your products or services positively, it can indirectly improve your AI visibility. The final strategy I would mention is using tradesman platforms such as Checkatrade, Bark, Rated People or MyBuilder, or partnering with a third party lead generation company. Across all these strategies it is essential to track KPIs and return on ad spend. Business owners should understand how much time and money they invest into each marketing channel and compare that with the revenue generated. Lead generation companies might use SEO, PPC or social media advertising to generate enquiries. If those enquiries provide a positive return on investment, they can become a valuable part of your marketing strategy.
