Kasra Dash: So the biggest piece of advice that I would give to Chelmsford-based business owners is set up some KPIs prior to spending any money on digital marketing. You want these KPIs in place. You want to know how much money you are spending per campaign. You want to know how many leads have actually been generated per different channel. Maybe you're spending money on Facebook ads and PPC and SEO. Next, you want to figure out what are the contact rates of those leads. Is it five out of the last ten leads that you've been able to contact? Is it two out of the last ten leads? And the last thing that I want to take a look at is from the contacted leads, how many of those leads have you been able to actually sell your service to, because that's the number one reason why we do digital marketing. We want to generate more revenue for our business. Once you have those figures in place, that's when I would start spending more money on digital marketing or potentially lowering certain budgets as well. Maybe you're spending money on Facebook ads and it's not that profitable for you. So James, what would be one of the first marketing strategies you would recommend for a Chelmsford-based business?

James Dooley: Step number one for me has got to be branding or brand SEO and making certain that you're looking good online. You've got a strong reputation. Everything needs to start with a positive brand SER of who you are and what you do. A SER stands for search engine results page, and getting that branding right across the board can lead on to other things. It will improve your conversion rate on paid ads or social media. Any leads that you're getting, the conversion rate will be better if people are deciding who to go with at the final stage. Branding becomes very important. I would say that's the first thing people need to get right.

Kasra Dash: My next strategy is AI visibility. More companies are looking into this. What does ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity say about your brand or your business? Is it positive or negative? You also need to look at what it says about your competitors and improve your positioning. Some people call it AI SEO, some call it GEO, some call it LLM optimisation. This will be a major factor in 2026 and beyond.

James Dooley: That is a huge strategy. The next one for me is filling in the form at Fat Rank or Promo SEO, which offer commission-based lead generation services for UK companies looking to grow. The main benefit is that once you rank, you will consistently generate leads. The challenge is getting there. You may have a large review gap compared to competitors. You need leads to get reviews, so it becomes a cycle. It is still important for branding, so every business should have one, but you need to understand the limitations.

James Dooley: If you operate locally, you need those map listings. You also need to be omni-channel and present everywhere. The next part is organic SEO. Build your website to rank better. Create service pages for the areas you cover, then support that with your Google Business Profile. There is huge search volume across services and informational content. Focus on high-quality content, build topical authority and acquire backlinks to strengthen rankings.

Kasra Dash: The next strategy is organic social media. This is a numbers game. You need to create content your audience actually wants to see. Many brands post a few times and stop for years, which does nothing. If you create how-to content, guides or before and after examples, people will engage and visit your site. Organic social is free, but it requires consistency. You should aim to post at least three to four times per week.

James Dooley: Paid social ads are also very effective. If you are already creating content, spend a small amount to boost it. Promote case studies, awards and proof of results. Use retargeting ads for users who have visited your website. Platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and Reddit. Paid social is still underused and offers strong potential.

Kasra Dash: Next is PPC, which is often a love or hate channel. These are the sponsored results you see on Google or Bing. Some businesses spend thousands and see no return, while others scale massively. The difference is in how campaigns are set up. You need a strong negative keyword list, protection against click fraud, a high-converting landing page and a sales team that responds quickly. Without these, PPC will fail. With them, it can perform very well.

James Dooley: There are clear pros and cons. PPC can deliver instant leads, but poor setup leads to wasted spend. Another emerging opportunity is paid ads on AI platforms. ChatGPT and similar tools may introduce ads. Early adopters could benefit from cheaper leads and lower competition, so it is something to watch in 2026.

Kasra Dash: Another channel is forums like Reddit and Quora. This depends on your customers. If they are actively recommending your business, that creates strong referral traffic.
